I know that girls like guys to be in control and not wusses but...

Do women prefer to be asked out for an actual date directly or in a descrete round about type way?

What if it is by a guy you know that you had never thought about like that before?

    you should just ask her direct, but maybe when you have an opportunity to speak to her without a crowd of people hovering.

    If you have no idea if she is interested, try asking her to coffee or to just hang out for starters. If you think she might already be interested, then just ask her out directly.
